How to Record Remote Podcast Interviews with TalkEdit

Record remote guests directly in TalkEdit — no Zoom, no Zencastr, no separate recording tool. Both sides record locally in their browser for maximum quality, then your guest's audio automatically appears in your project as a stereo mix.

How remote recording works

Host (left channel) + Guest (right channel) → stereo mix

What is Double-Ender Recording?

Traditional remote recording sends audio over the internet (Zoom, Google Meet), compressing it along the way. Double-ender recording means each person records locally on their own machine, then the files are combined. You get studio-quality audio — no compression artifacts, no internet dropouts, no "you're breaking up."

TalkEdit's remote recording produces a stereo WAV file with the host on the left channel and the guest on the right channel. This makes it easy to adjust levels, apply effects, or separate tracks in post-production.

What You Need

  • TalkEdit — installed on your computer
  • A microphone — built-in or external (both sides)
  • A browser — your guest opens a link in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari
  • Internet — only for the upload (recording is local)

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Open the Recording Panel

In TalkEdit, open the toolbar and click Record (or press 6). The Remote Recording panel opens in the sidebar.

2

Create a Session & Share the Link

Click "New Recording Session". TalkEdit creates a session and copies a link to your clipboard. Send this link to your guest (email, Slack, Discord, etc).

Record Your Audio (Host)

In the panel, click "Record Your Audio". Your browser will ask for microphone access — allow it. TalkEdit records your microphone locally in the browser. Recording continues even if your internet connection drops. Click "Stop Recording" when you're done.

Your Guest Records

When your guest opens the link, they see a simple page with a record button. They don't need to install anything, create an account, or sign up. They just:

  1. 1. Click "Allow" for microphone access
  2. 2. Click the record button
  3. 3. Speak — click stop when done
  4. 4. Wait for the upload to finish
  5. 5. Close the page
5

Automatic Merging

Once both tracks are uploaded, the server automatically merges them into a single stereo WAV file. Host audio goes to the left channel, guest audio to the right. TalkEdit detects the completed mix and shows a "Download Stereo Mix & Open" button.

6

Edit and Export

The recording opens in TalkEdit. Transcription starts automatically. Edit by deleting text, remove filler words, add background music, and export in your preferred format.

Why This is Better Than Zoom Recording

TalkEdit Zoom

Separate tracks Stereo (host L, guest R) Single mixed track
Guest setup Open a link — no account needed Install Zoom, create account
Offline resilience Records locally — internet drop doesn't affect audio Drops connection on internet loss
Post-recording workflow Auto-imports into editor, transcription starts Download file, import manually

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the guest need to install anything?

No. The guest just opens the link in their browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari). No install, no account, no sign-up.

Can I record a video call at the same time?

Yes. You can be on a Zoom/Google Meet call for the conversation while TalkEdit records locally. The recording is separate from the call, so you get clean audio without compression artifacts.

What format is the recording?

WAV, 48kHz, 16-bit. Stereo (host left channel, guest right channel). The same format used by professional podcast studios.

What happens if the internet drops during recording?

Recording continues locally in the browser. The upload happens after recording stops. As long as the internet is back by then, the file arrives intact.

Can I record multiple guests at once?

Not yet. v1 supports one host + one guest. Multiple guests is on the roadmap.
